EORI

  • What Is An EORI Number?

An EORI number is an Economic Operator Registration ✔️ and Identification number.  The EORI system was brought in on the 1st July 2009 and replaced the Traders Union Reference Number System which previously identified traders for customs declarations when importing or exporting cargo.

  • Who Needs An EORI Number?

Anyone importing commercial goods from outside the EU (or exporting in the opposite direction) needs an EORI number. The number is also used by customs authorities when exchanging information between themselves and government departments and agencies. The purpose of an EORI number is for statistics and security.

If you’re moving goods within the EU or importing products for your own private use you won’t need an EORI number.

  • How long does it take to get an EORI number?

You can use the GOV.UK service to apply for an EORI that starts with GB. The GOV.UK site says that it takes 5 to 10 minutes to apply and you will get your EORI either right away or within five working days.

  • What happens if I don’t supply an EORI when shipping internationally?

If you do not supply an EORI, then this may result in international parcels being delayed and incurring additional costs. For example, if HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) cannot clear your goods when leaving Great Britain, you may have to pay storage fees.
